The Real Deal of Sand Sculpting

Many have seen the cute sandy creations of amateur sand sculptors, but to see the actual World Championships of Sand Sculpting is to witness one of man-made wonders of the world.

The event is held in September, in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., and the installation remains intact for a month. Fifty sculptor’s come from around the globe enter solo (above is a 2008 solo sculpture by Joo Heng, of Singapore), doubles, and team competitions, and show their skills in a multi-day timed event.

Make plans to visit Canada in September for the spectacle. Look for: Carl Jara’s beautiful figurative work, Joo Heng’s super refined details, and Dan Belcher’s statements with strong figures and supporting detail. Well worth travel plans.
