Many have seen the cute sandy creations of amateur sand sculptors, but to see the actual World Championships of Sand Sculpting is to witness one of man-made wonders of the world. The event is held in September, in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., and the installation remains intact for a month. Fifty sculptor’s come from around the globe enter solo (above is a 2008 solo sculpture by Joo Heng, of Singapore), doubles, and team competitions, and show their skills in a multi-day timed event.
Make plans to visit Canada in September for the spectacle. Look for: Carl Jara’s beautiful figurative work, Joo Heng’s super refined details, and Dan Belcher’s statements with strong figures and supporting detail. Well worth travel plans.
